Valley Forge, The First Americans and the Sail Tie:
American patriots at Valley Forge actually used "Sail Ties" to bind the rags to their feet in place of shoes, which were in very short supply.
Piracy and the Sail Tie:
It is said what have always asserted to be smoldering fuses in the beard of Blackbeard the Pirate, were actually "Sail Ties".
Fashion and the Sail Tie:
A Carribbean legend of note is that the thong actually originated at an early regatta on the island of Bermuda. Midway thru the second race a protest was lodged with the judges to the effect one boat was short one crewmember. Much to the consternation of the skipper the boat prepared to come about and exit the race course when a shout arose from below. One of the grinders had noticed an unclothed female form amongst the sails in the cabin. As the NOR clearly specified all crew should be fully clothed and no appropriate clothing could be found to rectify the current situation said grinder, a very creative lad, showed extraordinary seaman ship skills in crafting a barely legal garment (a Thong) from "Sail Ties" lying in the bilge.
I have also heard the foregoing also attributed to the America's Cup endeavors of Ted Turner although no one from the New York Yacht Club, Ted Turners office or anyone associated with America's Cup will respond to inquiries.
More legends to be posted as they are discovered.
